The Stone Lab at Lewis University focuses on the design, engineering, and study of metalloenzymes and bioinorganic systems. Our research integrates synthetic inorganic chemistry, protein engineering, biocatalysis, and computational methods to develop new catalysts for sustainable chemistry and to understand metal-mediated biological processes.
Current areas of interest include biogenic manganese oxides, artificial metalloenzymes, zinc-binding enzymes and inhibitors, and undergraduate-centered research experiences (CUREs).
Our work is organized around three collaborative teams focused on manganese materials, zinc-binding inhibitors, and biocatalysis.
Biogenic manganese oxides for water oxidation and rare-earth sequestration.
AI-driven design of 8-hydroxyquinoline inhibitors for zinc metalloenzymes.
Chloroperoxidase and enzyme–MOF systems for sustainable biocatalysis and dye remediation.
